Denver Post "Yourhub Business Profiles" Q & A of La Cave - Wine, Food & Boutique
POSTED: 10/30/2014 12:01:00 AM MDT

Interview with Elizabeth Hampton, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: My partner and I have been involved in health care and customer service/hospitality all our lives. A little older and wiser, it was time to own and run a restaurant that has internationally influenced cuisine along with fine wine from around the world. To learn and enjoy learning is what drives us every day as we work to promote awareness, respect, appreciation and celebration of community and the foods that we all share, in the company of the ones we love.

La Cave Wine CellarLAKEWOOD, CO - OCTOBER 16: The wine case at La Cave, which holds almost 1,000 bottles of wine, on October 16, 2014, in Lakewood, Colorado. La Cave opened in 2012 and is owned and operated by Elizabeth Hampton and Youssef Chihab. (THE DENVER POST | Anya Semenoff)

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: A wine list that packs a powerful punch, that gives the guest great wines for the price. In our second year of operation, La Cave has won a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence (the only one in Lakewood). With many tapas and classically beautiful dishes made from scratch, the wine pairings will have every guest loving their meals at La Cave.

"I have been absolutely impressed with La Cave's food, service, hospitality and overall commitment to quality. I dine out 95% of the time and am a self-professed foodie. La Cave is a fantastic restaurant--one of the best in Denver." Visited June 2014

"What top of the line food offerings...all the way through the starters, entrees and desserts....truly delicious. Each is beautifully plated, too. The Margaritas we indulged in were quite fine. Service was excellent; knowledgeable staff and quietly attentive. Many thumbs up. Don't forget to explore the small boutique at the entry. It offers exquisite decorative accessories for the home and gift giving....wow!" Visited June 2014

August 2015 Very accommodating to special meal plans. Food was great and the prices were in line with the quality. Great service, friendly staff. They are tucked into the Sheraton but not part of the hotel. Outstanding wine list and very good cocktails. Highly recommend.
August 2015 Went for the wine dinner last month. We have been going to these for over a year. They have a new chef and his wine dinner debut was last month. Wow! His food was delicious and well presented.
August 2015 On top of that, the pairing selections were virtually perfect and the service was, as always, tremendous. We had a part of 6, 2 of whom were first-timers. Everyone was extremely pleased.
August 2015 La Cave is a great place to unwind in Lakewood. Cool bar atmosphere, excellent staff, and good food. The place is price accordingly for a better than average eatery. I've only dinner once and it was good and had several lunches and appetizers there - all very good. It's also a great place to socialize at Happy Hour. So give it a shot.
July 2015 I had dinner here with some friends and I must say the steak au poivre was the best I have ever had. Great restaurant in Lakewood! We have never tried it before seeing as it's in the hotel but we decided to try it out and it was just great! I recommend for all occasions!
May 2015 We do not live far from this little gem hidden in the Sheraton off 6th Avenue, but never tried it till this past week. It was quiet for lunch the weekday went. The meal was excellent- and not overpriced at all. Although we just had sandwiches, they were perfectly made. I had the BLT with a fried egg, my sweetheart had the pastrami Reuben which was excellent! (And I'm from NYC but this was better than most of the deli's back there.) The lemon dressing for the (large) side salad was light and crisp, nice flavor without being too tart. Service was attentive, not obtrusive and friendly. Would highly recommend!
March 2015 We were there for the monthly wine dinner. As always, Youssef and Elizabeth, the owners, put out a good spread. The food was good and well presented, and they paired the wines exceptionally well with it.
March 2015 Their service is always impeccable. They have the same staff on duty for each wine dinner and they get to know you. Youssef and Elizabeth exude a passion for what they do at La Cave and it shows in the attention to detail that is obvious in everything. The overall experience is just great.
February 2015 We had heard of this restaurant from neighborhood friends and happened upon it last night for the first time. We live locally and rarely look to the local hotels for great restaurants. But this was well worth the stop! The restaurant had a wonderful atmosphere and the food was delicious. The service was outstanding as well. We will definitely go back again based on this experience.
June 2014 We really enjoyed this restaurant. We were staying at the Sheraton, but this is independent of the chain. Really good carrot/ginger soup and my Mushroom Pasta was very tasty. My wife had the wedge salad and a very good filet for dinner. Good selection of wines. Finished up with a fine double espresso. Our waiter was originally from Italy and a really fine gentleman. We enjoyed our evening immensely.
June 2014 The new remodel brought about a fantastic ambiance for a late night drink, or romantic evening. The bartender makes fabulous Mojitos, and the owner was very welcoming and helpful. We ate the hummus pizza and meatballs. I expected typical bar food, but very far from it! Very upscale and top notch food!
February 2014 I have had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at La Cave, and I have been pleased with my experience in each case. The restaurant and lounge both have an excellent atmosphere: elegant but not frilly and modern while also comfortable and welcoming. (I love the fireplace in the lounge!) Their menu is one of the most interesting in town, and everything I have had has been done very well. I have yet to make it to a wine-pairing event, but that is definitely on my bucket list!
October 2013 All the staff treated me and the other 300 conference participants like we were Family!! They were easy going ,kind and professional. The owners were totally welcoming and a joy to know. They are hands on making sure everyone feels welcome and well looked after. !! Special thanks to Ken, and Renee and Eric who were quick to share laughs with us and make us so glad to be there. The food and ambiance were just perfect. Thank you everyone. !!
September 2013 “Outstanding and personable people -- and great food!”
September 2013 Wonderful food, a wide variety of influences, fair wine prices, Managing Partner Youssef runs a great restaurant with probably the very best play list on the stereo ever. Just go. I don't get effusive easily, but this was quite a find on its own and for it to be in our hotel lobby was a huge bonus.
January 2013 The food is EXCELLENT! I've been there three times, and I am quite a foodie. This food is fresh, the meats are highest quality and the prices are reasonable. Add that the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and guess what? Get hungry and GO eat there!!! YUM!!!
January 2013 We had a wonderful meal at La Cave. The service was fabulous and the food was delicious. I had scallops and my companion had Filet Mignon. Both were cooked to perfection! And the wine assortment is quite impressive. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a peaceful meal in a comfortable atmosphere. And they offered many entrees and desserts that accommodated my gluten restrictions. It was a wonderful experience all around.
January 2013 Fell on this great hidden gem while visiting in CO. The food was on point and their care to detail was a great plus. Couple that with an expansive wine list we were in heaven! Finished with a delightful chocolate dessert. Will surely return next time we are in town. Thank you La Cave for such a memorable night!
January 2013 Back in town on business and had the Fillet Mignon one night and salmon the next night. It was nothing short of outstanding! Beautiful view at night seeing city lights in the distance, relaxing ambiance and very comfortable in tastefully decorated dining and lounge areas. The owners are very kind and enthusiastic and are diligent to ensure that all desires are met and that everything is to your liking... Something you don't often see when traveling and taking your chances at various spots. When that happens it shines and makes for a great experience and feeling welcome! Happy that this restaurant is independently owned because it shows! The wine list was great as well and had a wonderful variety. Their price points are very reasonable. It is safe to say that this is becoming my regular go-to spot when in town!
February 2012 We always have such a great experience at La Cave. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner, they do a terrific job in creating delicious food, providing wonderful service, and an overall delightful dining experience. Thank you La Cave!

August 2015 This restaurant in in an inauspicious location in the Sheraton Denver West. We went to one of their monthly wine dinners with a 4 course fixed menu and wine pairings. It was excellent! The food was delicious. The wines were paired well and the Sommelier was very friendly, informative and attentive. One of the best evenings out we have had in a long time. We will be back.
July 2015 Had to come back for their crab cakes. The best. This place expertly knows how to elevate simple and familiar dishes. Try the Omg BLT--you won't regret the calories. I judge a restaurant on how well they do something seemingly straightforward as soup. Their baked potato soup had amazing depth of flavor and lusciously creamy. We were celebrating my friend's birthday and were brought a light and beautiful tiramisu. I polished it off and I'm not even a big tiramisu fan. Wait staff is polite, knowledgeable, and perfectly attentive. The very gracious owners even stopped by our table to say hello. Comfortable dining room and great view of downtown. La Cave clearly values high quality ingredients and has attracted a super talented staff. A favorite!
May 2015 The salmon was perfect and the La Cave salad was excellent. The ambience was relaxing and the staff gave great personnel service. This is a great place for a special occasion. I will go back.
April 2015 A very enjoyable meal and evening at La Cave Wine Bar - the chef added little touches of Morocco throughout the menu. It made simple dishes, like the salmon, new and interesting. The service was attentive but not intrusive. The wine selection was impressive and enjoyable. Definitely a place I would go again!
March 2015 I was a little surprised at first because this is a restaurant in a hotel. However, lunch was great! Service was prompt. The food was great. I had Scallops and my wife had the Salmon. They let us move to the bar area with the lighting and the fireplace for dessert which was a little more romantic. Overall, It was a great experience. I would eat there again.
January 2015 Eight of us went for lunch. The service is fabulous; the food is very good. It is quiet and we were not rushed at all. This group has now been there four times and we intend to return.
December 2014 My wife and I went to La Cave for Christmas dinner and had a wonderful dinner! Our wait person was a very nice, and enjoyable young man. The prime rib was EXCELLENT ! ! !
September 2013 I had a special request for this dinner and the staff made this evening very special. This is what customer service is all about. Can't say thank you enough for making this a special evening.
August 2013 The chocolate creme brulee is worthy of any Parisian restaurant. Every dish was perfect, fresh ingredients, beautifully plated, and well-seasoned. Staff was attentive and responsive.

August 2015 Spent a lovely night at La Cave last night for the Latin Lover's Wine Dinner. First time we have been to this restaurant and we'll definitely be back. Lovely view of downtown--great place to watch the full moon rise. Very good deal--$65 for 5 courses with wine pairings. Met some lovely people including our fellow diners, the chef, the sommelier for the night and the owner, Youssef. The wines were wonderful and the food delicious, my favorites being the tiradito of scallops, the huachinango de Vera Cruz (red snapper) and the Pampas Churrasco Steak. Looking forward to making the monthly wine dinners a regular treat. Highly recommended.
June 2015 My sister and I went here last night for our monthly "Sister Date Night." This place is a gem! It's too bad there weren't that many people there. I don't think enough people realize how great it is. Our waitress was friendly, informative and responsive without feeling like we were being hovered over. She made a great wine selection for my sister. We started with the mussels (another delicious recommendation). My sister had the duck breast and I had the scallops. Everything was cooked perfectly and was seasoned quite well. We had to cap the night off with dessert (tiramisu and chocolate torte). What a great night! By the way, they gave us a window view. A storm had just come through so we had a view of the storms over Denver and a rainbow to cap it off. I will definitely go back. By the way, they have monthly wine/dinner pairing. I want to do that! I recommend it to others. What a great way to experience La Cave.
June 2015 I really enjoy their service and healthy menu options. Their portions are either large or just enough and never too small. I eat there every Thursday and have really enjoyed my experience.
May 2015 Tried La Cave last night on a whim. We live on the west-side and went out with some of our best friends. Hard to believe that this little gem is right in our neighborhood. The restaurant is very nicely updated and we had nice views of the Denver skyline from our table. Appetizing menu, extensive wine list - excellent service and ultimately the food. Got out with dinner and drinks for about $60/head, which is great for fine dining. Would agree with others that some of the vegetable sides were just too salty, but the entrees were all excellent. Thanks to Youssef and his staff for making ours a wonderful date night!
February 2015 We started with appetizers, the mussels were quite delicious, the crab cakes were the best I've had in a long time. Everything was cooked to perfection, the staff and service were very nice and friendly, La Cave has a fantastic wine list, very unexpected, not your regular hotel Restaurant because it’s independently owned. We are definitely going back there.
October 2014 My wife and I stayed at the Sheraton in Denver and usually the hotel restaurant/bars are really more "hotelish" and less Foodie. To our pleasant surprise we stopped in to La Cave and feasted on their small plates, loving every bite. The wine was fantastic, but even better was their impeccable service. And I'm not talking about staff that just serves you like their supposed to, but staff that goes the extra mile to connect with you and your culinary experience. The atmosphere is very cool and has several different venue vibes between the restaurant and the bar/lounge. We give a very loud positive shout out to Youssef the owner who knows how to "get it" right...9/10th of the battle in hospitality is hiring the right staff. James our "Louisiana" Trace Adkins sounding bartender server, made us feel right at home along with his trusted protege Annalise from Italy...Great experience, great food, great people, great night...fyi...This restaurant is privately owned...Enjoy!
September 2014 We had our wedding dinner here and had such a great time. The service and food were both outstanding. Thank you guys for everything we truly had an amazing night. I highly recommend this restaurant and the private dinning room to anyone who is looking for a romantic night on the town. We will be back for our anniversary. Thank you Youssef you were extremely helpful and professional. Great job!

They put their heads together and developed a concept that centered around a wine bar with international influences in the food and drink options that represented various cultures and wine growing regions from around the world. With a focus on the important things in life like positive relationships and hard work, Elizabeth and Youssef have developed a strong business plan that utilizes both their business expertise and food and beverage experience.

Elizabeth believes that if you have really beautiful, seamless service, you won’t even notice it; it will just happen. Glasses and plates will come and go with little effort that it is non-invasive. La Cave is committed to providing the highest quality service along with the highest quality food and cuisine made with only the freshest herbs and spices. While most of the food and ingredients are sourced locally from various Colorado farms, many of the wines are imported from around the world. They come from various distributors that have relationships with different wineries from the world, including Australia, Argentina, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Chile, Portugal, Austria and Canada, California, and the Pacific Northwest. Every wine has been tasted, tested, and approved.

La Cave is proud of its dedication to excellence. First opened in November 2012, they received their first Wine Spectator Award in 2014 and their second in 2015. They aim to achieve a Two Glass Award in 2016, meaning they have at least 400-500 bottles of outstanding wine on their list, as well as an approved menu that is up to the standards of Wine Spectator.

Beyond the food and wine offerings to the general public, La Cave can host dinners and events for corporate groups. Whether it is a retirement party or a birthday party, a bridal shower or a rehearsal dinner, La Cave is ready to step in and help provide the space you need to make your event memorable. There is a flat screen TV in the private room for presentations and events have previously been hosted for pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, law firms, government workers, and various company holiday and appreciation parties. Companies have also hosted informal happy hours at La Cave with large platters of food and an actual wedding was once held in the private dining room; the shades and doors were closed and an officiate presided over the small and intimate ceremony that was followed by a slideshow and buffet.

What’s more, La Cave hosts its own monthly wine tastings and wine dinners. Every first Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:00 P.M. at only $20/person, guests can taste six different wines and enjoy hors d’oeuvres. Then, on the last Friday of each month, at the tasting are presented in a four to five course dinner, with a wine representative in attendance to educate and entertain guests.

La Cave believes food and wine can help build community, and it is their hope that the monthly wine tastings and food dinners will help people learn a little bit more about the various flavors offered.

La Cave is a great place for anniversaries, date nights, and business meetings. The cuisine and wine are simple, yet impressive, and people can actually have conversations without having to shout. Ladies love to lunch here and enjoy the fabulous and healthy salads and teas. Tapas are served in the lounge from 2:00 P.M. onward, but sometimes find their way to the dining room. La Cave is also the perfect spot for friends from out of town to meet up at and catch up with each other.

With its focus on elegance and simplicity, La Cave takes people back to the restaurants of yesterday, but maintains a sense of progressivism with its focus on contemporary music and international cuisine. Stop by today and enjoy a delicious glass of wine and tasty plate of food over conversation with a friend.
